Hoffman Estates Top Addiction Resource & Information Guide

Hoffman Estates, Illinois, is a small village in the Chicago suburbs. Like most communities, the area has been affected by substance abuse, particularly opioids. Learn what to look for as you search for inpatient drug and alcohol rehabs as well as addiction treatment.

Hoffman Estates is a village that sits primarily in Cook County, Illinois.  A small sliver of the village occupies Kane County.

Despite the fact that it is on the smaller side, it is home to the headquarters for Sears Holdings and Claire’s Accessories.

Sadly, it is also a place affected by substance use, especially opioids.

An analysis of Cook County for 2019 found 1,211 opioid-linked overdose deaths; 855 of those were in Chicago, and 356 in suburban Cook County. Out of the suburban Cook County deaths:

  • 53.9% involved heroin.
  • 70.9% involved fentanyl.
  • 19.1% involved opioid pain relievers.
  • 5.7% involved methadone.

A community health assessment for Kane County examined several factors for 2018, including which substances were most problematic. Forty percent or more of respondents called heroin and alcohol a top concern. Other findings include:

  • 21% of adults were diagnosed with a depressive disorder, higher than the statewide average.
  • 28% of county adults drink heavily (two or more drinks daily for men, or one or more for women) or binge alcohol (five or more drinks for men, or four or more for women, on any given occasion), a rate topping national averages.
  • 6% of county residents said they have used an illicit drug in the last 30 days, a rate higher than the U.S.’s 2.5%.

Student Substance Abuse in Hoffman Estates, IL

There are several colleges and universities in the Hoffman Estates, Illinois, area. Private schools like Roosevelt University (Chicago), DePaul University (Chicago), and Judson University (Elgin), as well as public colleges like Northeastern Illinois, University of Illinois-Chicago, and Chicago State University are just a few options out of many.

In 2020, alcohol use among college students went down from 2019, possibly due to COVID-19 lockdowns and study-from-home rules being put into place. It remains to be seen if that trend will remain stable or continue into the 2021–22 school year.

Cannabis use—on the other hand—climbed 6% from 2015 to 2020, with 44% of college students admitting to using marijuana. Legalization and decriminalization of cannabis may factor into that trend.

One University of Illinois study found:

  • Illinois students were more likely to have used cannabis in the last year compared to peers at other schools (36.3% vs. 24.2%).
  • Nearly 22% of Illinois students used marijuana in the last 30 days, compared to 16.4% of their counterparts.
  • Prescription drugs were the third most used substance on campuses; 13.5% of Illinois students admitted to using in the past 12 months.

Students may also have access to treatment centers around the state, such as a rehab center in Oak Park, Illinois.

Choosing from Rehabs in Hoffman Estates, IL

There are dozens of rehab treatment options in the Hoffman Estates, Illinois, area. Because of that, it may seem overwhelming to narrow down the selection process. However, research can make it easier to find the right rehab for you.

Accreditation

Licensing and accreditation are two things to consider as you search for a drug and alcohol rehab. Licensing and accrediting authorities include the Joint Commission and LegitScript. They inspect facilities, talk to patients and staff, and ensure everything is current and to the letter regarding client care, training, and more.

To find out about a center’s certifications and licensing, that information may be found online or by contacting the facility.

Demographics

Demographics offer a snapshot of an area. For example, it can look at a city, county, state, or nation, and detailed data on age groups, religion, race, culture, gender, and more. It can also be used to better understand the people who live there and better determine their needs. That information can be used to shape how medical and mental health treatments.

Hoffman Estates, for example, is predominantly white (56.5%), with nearly 5% of the population being Black, 24.2% Asian, and 18.6% Hispanic or Latino.

Medical care in the United States is shaped by Western thought and tradition, but that does not always consider the norms of other cultures and races. Language obstacles may make it harder to connect and communicate with some patients. A better understanding of one’s cultural norms and beliefs about addiction or mental illness (or illness, period) can break down barriers and lead to better patient outcomes. Even simply listening to the patent and making a better effort to understand them can make a difference in receptiveness to treatment.

Patient-to-Staff Ratio

The patient-to-staff ratio, or the number of patients under every staff member’s care, can make a significant difference in a client’s care. A lower ratio means each patient can receive more one-on-one time with the doctor, nurse, or counselor. That can lead to a better understanding of the patient’s needs and challenges and may result in more thorough treatment. Compare ratios between centers nearby, such as a treatment center in Palatine, IL.

What to Expect During Inpatient Drug Rehab in Hoffman Estates, IL

There are some standard elements patients can expect from inpatient drug rehab in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. A complete course of addiction care occurs in three stages: evaluation, treatment, and aftercare.

  • Evaluation. This takes place during intake, where the patient receives a full exam, including lab tests. Lab work determines if any immediate medical concerns need to be attended to. A mental health screening looks for underlying disorders like depression, trauma, or anxiety. The staff compiles a history of the client’s substance use. All of this information is used to devise a treatment plan.
  • Treatment. Treatment usually occurs in two parts. Part one, if needed, is detoxification. Here, the patient is weaned off of drugs or alcohol. Sometimes medical assistance is needed to ensure it occurs safely and comfortably. Once the patient is medically stable, then treatment may begin. That includes therapies (one-on-one and group), which help the patient better understand the root causes of their addiction and develop stronger coping mechanisms.
  • Aftercare. This stage readies the patient for life following rehab. They’ve had time to practice coping strategies and learn better stress management techniques. Once they leave, they’ll have those tools as well as contacts with counselors and support groups closer to home, so they can continue to build on the foundation of their recovery.

Aftercare Planning Procedures

Rehab isn’t over the moment a person checks out of the inpatient center. Recovery goes on for weeks, months, and years. It takes effort to remain sober. Aftercare is a huge factor in staying that way. That’s when the rehab center readies the patient for life after rehab. Some ways they might provide an assist include:

  • Relapse prevention. Sometimes a person relapses (begins using again) due to some kind of trigger. Relapse prevention teaches how to manage those kinds of triggers, practice self-care, notice the signs of a brewing problem, and get help when needed. Most, or all, of these steps will likely have been addressed in rehab, but guides, counseling, and support groups can reinforce that.
  • Referrals. When a patient must travel home after rehab, the center will provide them with lists of local support options. It could be 12-step groups or something similar, but it could also be contact information for counselors so they can continue their recovery.
  • Continuing care. Some patients may choose to return to the inpatient rehab (especially if they live nearby) to continue care on an outpatient basis.

Services Included in Treatment

The services a rehab offers are another thing to look into as you search for a facility. Some places offer activities linked to their location. Beachside activities at an oceanside rehab are just one example. Others may offer specific relaxation exercises or amenities to make patients feel more at home. If wanted services are unavailable in a local center, consider checking a treatment facility in Elgin. Some options may include:

  • Specific therapies (cognitive-behavioral, etc.)
  • Recreational activities
  • Internet/wif-fi
  • Fitness center
  • Swimming pool
  • Meditation room
  • Support groups
  • Single rooms
  • Travel assistance

Treatment Options at Rehab Centers in Hoffman Estates, Illinois

Treatment for drug and alcohol abuse can vary. Some approaches help people become sober and stay that way. Assessment, treatment, and aftercare are at the core of most rehab programs, but other components can be implemented to tailor a recovery plan. Ideally, that will result in more successful outcomes.

A person who has a long history of substance abuse, for example, may fare better from inpatient care that goes on for 60 or 90 days instead of 30. Someone with a deeper faith may benefit more from spiritual 12 steps over secular options.

Below are some types of treatments to consider in your search for a rehab center.

Types of Treatment Available

Treatment includes intake/assessment, therapies, and aftercare. Exactly what is addressed in rehab will depend on the patient. One person may need to focus more on trauma, while another may need to be treated for anxiety disorders. One, some, or all of the following treatments may be helpful.

12-Step Rehab in Hoffman Estates, IL

Alcoholics Anonymous is the oldest and best-known of these peer-support groups. Today there are many others like Cocaine Anonymous or Heroin Anonymous. Members work through the 12 steps, admitting there is a problem and that they’re powerless to their addiction. They’re more spiritual, though a person need not be religious to participate. Usually, members at least admit to a higher power. Some consider that higher power to be God, which others consider it to be something greater than themselves. Twelve-step treatments are among the most popular, so consider comparing them with facilities around the state, such as a Springfield treatment facility.

Non-12-Step Rehab in Hoffman Estates, IL

Like 12-step groups, non-12 steps also hinge on peer support, but they tend to take a more secular and science-backed approach. Some people prefer them because they don’t like to admit powerlessness to their addictions, the way many 12 steps advocate. The focus instead might be on self-empowerment, or principles of psychotherapy may factor. SMART Recovery is one non-12-step (of many). It uses components of cognitive-behavioral therapy to help its members help themselves.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in Hoffman Estates, IL

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of talk therapy that can help with several conditions, and the patient tends to make at least some progress quickly, sometimes in a matter of weeks. CBT can help people with substance use disorders as well as depression, anxiety, and trauma. The patient will talk through issues, learn to identify problematic behaviors and thought patterns, and replace them with healthier alternatives.

Luxury Rehab in Hoffman Estates, IL

The treatment at a luxury rehab features evidence-based therapies and group support, but the centers themselves are very high-end. Sometimes they have private rooms, spa-like amenities, oceanside views, gourmet meals, and other luxurious touches. Patient-to-staff ratios might be lower, allowing for more individualized care. Executives sometimes choose luxury rehabs because they can continue to work as they get treatment in added privacy. Luxury rehab programs may only be available in a larger city, such as a treatment facility in Chicago, IL. However, they can be found locally.

Alcohol Rehab in Hoffman Estates, IL

The patient will live on-site for 30, 60, 90, or more days to treat their alcohol use disorder. If a person is dependent on alcohol, they may need help tapering, or weaning, off the substance. The stronger the dependence, the more dangerous it is to go cold turkey. Medical oversight can help, providing medication to minimize withdrawal symptoms like vomiting, nausea, insomnia, and anxiety. From there, the patient will continue on to treatment to address the causes of their drinking and learn ways to remain sober.

Drug Rehab in Hoffman Estates, IL

Drug rehab has a lot in common with alcohol rehab. Depending on what a person is dependent on and any underlying conditions, that will shape the treatment. If a person is in treatment for opioid or benzodiazepine addiction, that can be extremely challenging to quit. Sometimes stopping cold turkey can be dangerous. A rehab with on-site medical staff will help the patient through withdrawal (sometimes with medications to ease vomiting, tremors, and agitation). Once medically stable, they’ll work on addressing the underlying causes of their substance use.

IOP Program in Hoffman Estates, IL

IOP is shorthand for intensive outpatient. Under this kind of care, the patient does not reside at the rehab center. Instead, they visit regularly from home or from a sober living facility to receive treatment. It may be a couple of times a week for several hours at a time, or it may be daily. It will vary case by case. Sometimes IOP can take the place of inpatient care, especially if a person has a shorter history of substance use. It can also be a good transition from inpatient to independence.

Dual Diagnosis Rehab in Hoffman Estates, IL

Also referred to as co-occurring disorders, dual diagnosis patients have both a mental disorder like depression or anxiety and a substance use disorder. Sometimes, a person has anxiety and resorts to self-medication through drugs or alcohol, and that leads to a substance use disorder. Sometimes a substance use disorder results in mental illness. Either way, getting both conditions treated can ensure better outcomes. In 2019, an estimated 9.5 million U.S. adults had co-occurring disorders.

Holistic Rehab in Hoffman Estates, IL

Holistic rehab focuses on healing the mind, body, and spirit. Acupuncture, yoga, meditation may be part of the program, especially as data continues to reveal holistic approaches offer some genuine benefits to overall well-being. The goal is to promote health and relaxation. Healthier ways to beat stress and remain in the moment can be invaluable in preventing relapse.

Paying for Rehabs in Hoffman Estates, Illinois

Drug and alcohol rehab isn’t necessarily cheap. The exact cost generally will depend on the treatment center as well as a person’s insurance plan.

Contacting your health insurance provider is a solid first step. They’ll verify exactly what is covered, for how long, and what the deductibles and co-pays will be. Calling the rehab center is another good idea. They tend to work hand-in-hand with insurance companies and can provide answers about services, costs, and more.

Most insurance plans will cover behavioral health services and substance abuse treatment. The Affordable Care Act designated such services as essential health benefits. There are, however, exceptions for small group plans. Going to places that are in-network can save large quantities of money, so it’s good to get answers before you go to avoid any surprises when the billing statements start to arrive.

Illinois has programs for individuals with substance use disorders, too, including:

  • The Department of Human Services (DHS) offers Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (AODA) evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for people with alcohol and drug disorders.
  • Cook County has a Drug Court Treatment program to help nonviolent offenders receive substance abuse treatment as part of their parole.
  • Kane County Drug Rehabilitation Court (KCDRC) is an alternative to incarceration for drug offenders. Substance abuse professionals and local social service programs collaborate with the courts. Participants must make court appearances, complete treatment, find employment, and receive drug testing. The program requires regular court appearances, treatment completion, employment, and random drug testing as an alternative to jail.

Medicare and Medicaid also cover substance use and mental health care. The extent will vary. Medicare has supplemental plans for more thorough coverage. For Medicaid, a person must qualify. A place must accept such plans, too, to save the patient from higher bills.

Other options to cover rehab include:

  • Loans. A person might borrow money or opt for financing to pay for treatment.
  • Sliding scales. Many rehabs may try to work with a patient to set up a payment plan that notes the patient’s financial status and income to make things more manageable.
  • Out-of-pocket. Some people opt to pay out-of-pocket, using savings, or get funds from family or friends.

Traveling to Hoffman Estates, Illinois, Rehab Centers

People traveling to the Chicago area from out of town or out of state might arrive at O’Hare International Airport, which is a half-hour’s drive from Hoffman Estates (or slightly shorter or longer, depending on traffic). DuPage Regional Airport and Schaumburg Regional Airport are also in the area, approximately 20–30 minutes away.

From O’Hare, a person could travel by bus, train, or take a rental or rideshare to Hoffman Estates. The Metra Rail runs through the area, too.

Many centers can offer advice on traveling to and from their facilities. Some even may be willing to pick up clients from the airport and drive them back once their check out of rehab.

Hoffman Estates, Illinois Addiction Treatment Resources

12 Steps

Twelve-step plans focus more on faith (or some type of higher power), and members will work with them one by one as they recover and work on sobriety. Normally these peer support groups meet in person, but with COVID-19, many groups were moved online. It’s a good idea to find out if meetings are online-only or in-person before you go.

  • Al-Anon and Alateen. For those who have loved ones with drinking problems. Alateen is for teenagers.
  • Local Celebrate Recovery groups. To help people overcome addictions of all kinds. The focus is Christ-centric.
  • Marijuana Anonymous (MA). For people quitting cannabis addiction.
  • Cocaine Anonymous (CA). For those recovering from dependence on cocaine or other mind-altering substances.
  • Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA). For people with co-occurring disorders who want to work on managing their mental health condition as well as their substance use disorder.
  • Nar-Anon. Using the 12 steps to overcome addiction.
  • Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACA). For people who were raised in dysfunctional homes.

Non-12 Steps

Non-12-step programs take a more secular approach to addiction recovery. Such groups focus more on scientific principles.

  • LifeRing Secular Recovery. Members focus on the group’s three S’s: sobriety, security, and self-help.
  • SMART Recovery. (Self-Management and Recovery Training). SMART is for people with addictions of any kind, not just drugs or alcohol. It’s rooted in cognitive-behavioral therapies and motivation.
  • Women for Sobriety. WFS has a 13-point system that encourages spiritual growth.
  • Moderation Management. This isn’t about stopping drinking outright but instead about practicing moderation.

Veterans Affairs Addiction Treatment

When a person joins the military, they may see combat, risking trauma and injury. That makes them more vulnerable to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or lingering pains from various accidents or wounds experienced while on duty.

Anywhere from 11-20% of veterans who served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom have PTSD. The numbers are higher among Vietnam Veterans. Servicemen and servicewomen may face sexual assault or harassment, too.

Some veterans may believe they must endure in silence (or feel they have no other choice). As a result, they may turn to drugs or alcohol to manage both physical and/or emotional pain.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers counseling, links to peer support, and more to help veterans through substance abuse and mental health woes. Mental health and substance abuse treatments are available at many nearby VA clinics, including the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital in Hoffman Estates. Other area medical centers and outpatient clinics can be found here.
