Not all substance use disorder involves the use of illegal drugs or misuse of prescription drugs. Some substances, although not legally approved as a drug or dietary substance, are unregulated. Phenibut, an anti-anxiety drug developed for the USSR’s space program, is legal to possess in the US, but not to sell. Still, it is widely available, addictive, dangerous, and may require treatment at a rehab center.
